How to Price Your Hustle (Without Underselling Yourself)

So you’ve got a side hustle — braiding, baking, fixing phones, making logos, tutoring, sewing, or cleaning.

    Now the big question comes:
    “How much do you charge?”

In this episode, we help you price your hustle like a pro, even if you’re just starting out. Underselling yourself won’t grow your business — and overcharging without strategy might chase away clients.

    Let’s find your sweet spot.

    💰 1. Know Your Costs

Before setting any price, understand what it costs you to deliver your service.

    Include:

    • Materials (hair products, flour, paper, airtime)
    • Transport (e.g. taxi fare to the client)
    • Data costs (if you’re online)
    • Your time (yes, that counts too!)

    📌 Example:
If it costs you R30 in airtime, R20 in ingredients, and 2 hours of your time (value R50/hr), then the minimum price should be:

    R30 + R20 + (2×R50) = R150

🛍 2. Research What Others Charge

    Check:

    • Local Facebook groups or WhatsApp business networks
    • Competitors in your area
    • Online freelancers offering similar services (even Fiverr or LinkedIn)

Know the market — don’t copy, but understand what people are willing to pay.

📈 3. Add Value, Then Add Your Profit

Instead of racing to the bottom, offer more value:

    • “Free delivery for first-time customers”
    • “Get 1 free braid repair in 7 days”
    • “Order 3 cupcakes, get 1 extra”

Once you’re adding value, you earn the right to charge more.

Then, add profit on top of your costs — even R30 to R100 per service, depending on demand.

    📊 4. Create Price Tiers

    Offer options for different budgets:

    Example:

    • Basic Logo Design – R150
    • Logo + Business Card – R250
    • Full Brand Kit – R400

Give your customer choices instead of just one flat rate.

🧾 5. Present Your Prices Professionally

Use Canva or a simple list to create a price sheet. Send via WhatsApp, email, or post on your page.

    ✅ Be clear and upfront.
✅ Say “Prices start from R___” to leave room for negotiation if needed.
✅ Offer discounts only for bulk, loyal, or early customers.

    ✨ Final Word

Price with confidence. Your time, energy, and skill are valuable. If you don’t believe your hustle is worth it — no one else will.

Be fair, be firm, and own your worth.
